Girona has truly earned its reputation as a road cycling paradise. Quiet back roads, iconic climbs, mild weather almost all year round and a cycling atmosphere that hooks you from day one. If you dream of spending a few days living like a pro cyclist, our Classic Climbs of Girona tour is your challenge: a 5-day trip taking in the most emblematic ascents in the area, with everything organised so that all you have to think about is pedalling.

In this article we explain in detail what the tour is like, which climbs you will tackle, where you will stay and why this is one of the best cycling experiences in Girona for road bike lovers.

Girona, a top destination for road cycling

More and more cyclists from all over the world are choosing Girona for their cycling holidays. It’s no coincidence:

  • Iconic climbs such as Rocacorba, Els Àngels, Santa Pellaia or Sant Grau.
  • Variety of landscapes: the Pyrenees in the background, gentle hills, forests, medieval villages and the Costa Brava.
  • Quality roads with low traffic on most routes.
  • A cycling atmosphere 365 days a year: cafés, shops and services designed for cyclists.

Our Classic Climbs of Girona road tour brings together the best of this territory in a 5-day experience based in a bike-friendly boutique hotel, with routes designed by local guides and professional support at every stage.

The Classic Climbs of Girona tour: 5 days, 4 unforgettable stages

This is a road cycling tour in Girona designed for experienced cyclists who enjoy mountain challenges and long days in the saddle, but who also value comfort, good accommodation and local gastronomy.

Base in Monells: sleeping in a medieval village

Throughout the trip you will stay at Hotel Boutique Summum, in Monells, a small medieval village in the Empordà region, just 15 minutes from Girona city.

  • Charming rooms with all modern comforts.
  • Peaceful atmosphere to rest after each stage.
  • Pool and relaxing areas to stretch, unwind and chat about the day’s ride.

From here we depart every day by bike towards the different classic climbs of Girona and return at the end of the day to enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Day 1 – Els Àngels & Santa Pellaia: the perfect welcome

The tour starts at Hotel Boutique Summum, where we welcome you, set up your bike (or the one you hire from us) and hold the welcome briefing.

The first route is the ideal combination to warm up your legs with two classic Girona climbs:

  • Els Àngels: a legendary climb, very popular with local and professional cyclists, with spectacular views over Girona and the Empordà.
  • Santa Pellaia: a long, steady climb, perfect for finding your rhythm and enjoying the surroundings.

At the end of the afternoon, we head back to the hotel, with time to relax and enjoy a welcome dinner with local produce.

Day 2 – Rocacorba: the queen stage

The second day is the heart of the cycling challenge: the ascent of Rocacorba, possibly the most famous climb in Girona.

  • A demanding climb, with sustained gradients that will really test your legs.
  • Quiet road, beautiful natural surroundings and the atmosphere of a “test climb” used by many professionals.
  • Views over Lake Banyoles and the Pyrenees from the higher sections.

After conquering Rocacorba, we enjoy a well-earned rest, a picnic-style lunch and then return to the hotel to recover with a good dinner and a restorative night’s sleep.

Day 3 – Coastal loop to Tossa de Mar (Sant Grau)

On the third day we combine mountains and Costa Brava. We set off on a loop that takes us to Tossa de Mar, one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the area, and climb Sant Grau, one of those roads every road cyclist dreams of riding:

  • Flowing bends, Mediterranean sea views and spectacular scenery.
  • A “leg-breaker” terrain with constant ups and downs and fast descents.
  • A stop by the sea to eat and recharge.

Many riders describe this as the most photogenic stage of the tour: the combination of sea, mountains and winding roads is simply perfect.

Day 4 – Coastal route to Llafranc

On the fourth stage we continue exploring the Costa Brava by road bike with a route towards Llafranc, another local classic:

  • Sections right by the sea, charming coastal villages and postcard views.
  • Quiet roads, ideal for enjoying a final long day on the bike at a more relaxed pace if you wish.
  • Plenty of chances to ride in a group, take photos and savour the last kilometres of the trip.

Back at the hotel, we enjoy a farewell dinner and a final toast to having conquered the classic climbs of Girona.

Day 5 – Departure and goodbye

The last day is the time to pack your bags, enjoy breakfast at the hotel and organise your transfer home. If your schedule allows, we can always recommend a short easy spin or a stroll around Monells or Girona.
